NAOIBH'S WORLD
PROJECT TYPE:
Installation.
DATE:
2022
EXHIBITED AT:
CTRL Birmingham School of Art Degree Show. Birmingham City University. Birmingham, UK. (June 2022)
VIDEOS:
I created a series of costumes to understand and explore my position within the world, using performance, painting and installation. Each of these costumes focuses on a specific trait of autism that I experience, such as masking, eye contact, and feeling overwhelmed. Through bright, bold and camp materials, Naoibh’s World embraces my lack of assimilation and creates space for me to exist authentically.
DESCRIPTION: A three-walled room with wooden floor opens to the view with bright yellow splotches of paint across the walls. A wide, flat brimmed hat made of floor-length pieces of yarn in various shades of blue floats in the centre of the room above a pair of yellow gogo boots. To the right, a smooth green pickle-shaped structure with large cartoonish eyes stands on its own. Covering the eyes are two yellow-gloved arms, which fan out into a yellow cape that covers the back of the creature. On the left side of the room, a painted board leans against the wall depicting a repeating pattern of green, yellow, pink and blue gloves. On a chair in front of the painting is a matching ghillie suit made of rubber gloves.
